It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no, it’s free comic book day! The May 5 event was a hit at the local video store in Licking, Boondocks, that has recently been selling comic books and video games.
Owner Brandon Smith has been prepping for the day for the past month, at least. The national comic book day has always been the first Saturday in May.
“I’m thrilled and surprised at the turnout,” said Smith. “We had a great day Saturday because of it. We’re definitely looking at doing it again next year, and hopefully it’ll be bigger.”
Smith went on to say that he had ordered 400 comic books for the day to hand out, and ended up with only about 50 left. The day started at 11 a.m. and there was a line waiting outside the door of people of all ages.
The limit was two comic books at the start of the day because of all the people, but by the end of the day, it was moved to three books. Smith also had free posters from the new Venom movie coming out Oct. 5. The bigger the turnouts, the more that he can order in the future. There was also a 10-15 percent discount on comic books throughout the weekend; almost everyone who came in for a free comic book, also ended up purchasing one.
Boondocks is located at 119 Highway 32 in Licking, and the phone number is 573-674-4252.
