Over the past four years, Oakwood Golf Course here in Texas County has hosted a benefit golf tournament with proceeds going to benefit the Gentry Center in Cabool. 2017 was no exception, and on September 9th and 10th Oakwood hosted Gentry Residential Care Center’s 18 hole 4-person scramble.
An entry fee of $60 per player included golf cart, a free mulligan, and entry into closest to pin, longest drive and longest putt contests. On Sunday afternoon at the conclusion of the tournament, contestants were treated to a fabulous fish fry hosted by the Houston Lion’s Club. Don and Nicole Shelhammer, along with granddaughter Leila prepared the meal.
In addition to a wonderful weekend of golf, $6000.00 was raised to benefit the culinary program at Gentry Treatment Center, including scholarships and caps and gowns for graduates.
For those not familiar with the culinary program at Gentry, the young men in residential treatment at the Cabool facility undergo training to be chefs, not just food service workers. At a function catered by “the Gentry Boys,” you can expect true cuisine, prepared with flair, and served by a respectful, white-jacketed team who often receive applause for the excellence of the meal.
