Lady Cats win in Show Me Shootout

Submitted by Coach Steven Rissler
The Licking Lady Wildcats started the season with a rematch against the South Callaway Lady Bulldogs. Licking beat South Callaway in the sectional round last season ending their season and their 26 game winning streak.
Licking and South Callaway were both voted as the #1 seed in their respective leagues. The format of the Show Me Shootout matches up all the schools in the Frisco League with the school of the same seed from the Show Me Conference. The Frisco League girls won this year’s trophy with 6 wins compared to 3 wins for the Show Me.
South Callaway took an early 4-0 lead. Licking was able to push the lead to 8 but only led 25-21 at the half. The 3rd quarter belonged to South Callaway. Licking was held scoreless for 6 straight minutes but managed to only trail 31-28 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The Lady Cats took a slim 32-31 lead with 3 minutes remaining. Karlee Holland held the ball at half court until South Callaway came out of their zone. She then drove the lane and dished to Abby Moncrief who powered one in to extend the lead. With just under a minute, South Callaway hit a 3 that tied the game at 36. Licking was holding for the last shot and the South Callaway coach called for his team to foul Holland with 18 seconds left. Holland made 1 of 2 free throws to take the lead back. She then stole the outlet pass and dribbled off 10 seconds before finding Athena Hood who was fouled with 8 seconds left. Hood made both of her free throws to make it 39-36. South Callaway missed a deep 2 attempt at the buzzer and the Lady Cats escaped with a close victory over a top-ten team.
Holland led with 17 points, 8 steals, 15 deflections and 4 rebounds. Moncrief added 9 points, Hood and Kylie Taylor chipped in 5 points apiece. Anna Sullins totaled 3 points and 5 rebounds. Lainy Hadix, Tomi Rose, Kiley Ingram and Kasey Richards all saw significant minutes also.
