A little snow falling didn’t dampen the spirits of the packed crowd at the LHS Homecoming game Friday evening. Wildcat supporters were treated to a junior varsity game that went into double overtime, the crowning of this year’s homecoming king and queen, and the Big Cat Classic game between Licking and Salem.
If that wasn’t enough, the Booster Club sponsored a silent auction of delicious baked goods and desserts provided by the LHS athletes and coaches. Sweets lined both sides of the hall outside the gym, and favorites were battled over throughout the evening. The 2018 senior banners were also available for bids. Booster club t-shirts and other memorabilia were for sale. Funds raised were to support the purchase of uniforms.
The JV game finale had the crowd fired up. Licking came from behind to tie Salem with a Blake Payne shot at the buzzer, sending the game into overtime, then Kaleb Keaton hit at the end of the first overtime to stay alive for a second overtime. The Wildcats outlasted the Tigers, winning 61-60.
Boys and girls basketball teams, cheerleaders, and their coaches were recognized from all years ending in nines. The names of these alumni and coaches from the 1999 and 2009 teams were announced. Then it was time to meet the Homecoming candidates.
This year’s Homecoming King candidates were Connor Medlock, Michael Milhizer and Evan Mitchell. The Homecoming Queen candidates included Grace Bonnell, Elaina Hadix and Athena Hood. Last year’s Homecoming King and Queen, Jordan Barton and Kelly Bonnell, were present to crown this year’s winners. All of these young men and women are impressive in their high school careers, their citizenship, and their plans for the future. First, the Homecoming King was announced – Evan Mitchell received the honor. All waited anxiously for the announcement of the Homecoming Queen, and the crowd cheered as Athena Hood’s name was called.
As exciting as this was, the evening wasn’t over yet. The Big Cat Classic was about to begin. The Wildcats built a gradual lead by halftime. The crowd was kept in the game at half-time by a dance routine performed by the cheerleading squad. The Wildcats continued to build their lead in the second half, and by the end of the fourth, some of the heroes from the JV game were back on the floor. Licking took the trophy for this year’s Big Cat Classic, 70-43.
If attendees needed more to make it a great evening, they were able to pick up their auction wins on their way out for a sweet end to the evening.
