The Knights of Columbus will be hosting a Free Throw Championship this Sunday, Dec. 13 at the Licking FEMA gym for boys and girls ages nine – fourteen. Sign up begins at 12 – 1 p.m. and the competition starts at 1 p.m. The KOC welcomes all kids between the ages of nine and fourteen to join the fun regardless of where you attend school.
The Knights of Columbus Council #12650 has been locally hosting the Free Throw Championship for the past seven years. The local winners move on to district level, which is held in Willow Springs, and then advance to regional level, with competitions held at Springfield Catholic High School. State competitions are held at Fr. Tolton Catholic High School in Columbia.
The competition consists of 6 classes for girls and 6 classes for boys, with one winner for each class. The younger age brackets compete at a twelve-foot free throw line with the older age brackets competing at a fifteen-foot free throw line. Each participant is given three free throw practice shots before shooting the competition 15 shots. Ties will be broken by shoot offs, with one winner being named for each class. Each participant at the local level in Licking will receive a certificate of participation, with top winner also receiving a certificate and trophy. District level winners receive a medallion, regional winners receive a plaque and state winners first and second place will receive a trophy.
The KOC encourages the kids’ involvement with this free fun event.
