Lady Cats Win at Willow Springs

Submitted by Steven Rissler

The Lady Cats traveled to Willow Springs on January 3rd for their first game of the new year. Licking didn’t have a good start to the game on offense but managed to lead 15-8 despite several missed layups. Shots began to fall in the second for both teams but Licking again won the quarter and led 34-21 at intermission. The Lady Cats took control in the third quarter behind two 3s each from Lexi Hadix and Kylie Taylor. The lead ballooned to as much as 26, but Licking led 54-34 with one quarter to play. Willow Springs would come to life with 5 minutes remaining in the game. Licking didn’t match the rise in intensity level and saw the lead fall from 20+ to as low as 10. The combination of Willow Springs aggressive rebounding and Licking’s inability to make free throws led to the major comeback by the Lady Bears. After missing 6 free throws in a row, Licking was finally able to make just enough to end the Willow comeback effort. LHS would finish 7/18 from the line in the fourth. Licking would eventually get the 69-55 road win over a physical district opponent.

Karlee Holland led with 29 points on 10/17 shooting with 6 steals, 5 assists and 10 deflections. Taylor added 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals. Hadix hit three 3s for 9 points, Abby Moncrief 9 points and 7 rebounds, Anna Sullins 4 points and 6 rebounds, Lainy Hadix 3 points.
“Willow got 24 offensive rebounds tonight, including 10 in the last four minutes alone. We went into cruise control way too early tonight. Willow plays six seniors and they weren’t going to lie down. For us to win by 14 on the road and give up that many second chance opportunities is mind blowing. We have a week to get that issue fixed before we play again.” Coach Rissler
