Funds needed to send students to Missouri Boys/Girls State

By Shari Harris,

Four young men have been accepted for American Legion’s Missouri Boys State, and nine young women have been accepted to attend American Legion Auxiliary’s Missouri Girls State in June of 2019. This is the first time in more than ten years that young women from Licking High School have applied and been accepted to attend Girls State.
Boys and Girls State are seven to eight day programs held in June for high school students who have just completed their junior year. The programs develop leadership skills, confidence and an enhanced understanding of how government functions.
This year will be the 80th session of Missouri Boys State (MBS), and it will be held June 15-22 on the University of Central Missouri campus in Warrensburg. Young men attending MBS are divided into 16 cities with around 60 citizens in each city. There are two cities per county and two political parties. The MBS website emphasizes their one paramount idea: “That the individual is the one with the power to change the world.”
Missouri Girls State (MGS) will be held the following week, June 23-29, in the same location. It began in 1940, but missed the 1943 and 1945 sessions due to war. Girls State has seven counties and 21 cities, with around 760 citizens in its program. Delegates to MGS are chosen by an application and interview process. The young women participating will learn to govern their state, county and city.
The students will be housed in the University dormitories, and communities are asked to help fund the cost for these young men and women to attend. The cost this year for Boys State is $500 per student and for Girls State is $300 per student. American Legion and Auxiliary members will be assisting to gather funds. If anyone would like to contribute to the development of these young leaders of tomorrow, they may write a check (of any amount). February 22nd is the deadline to send checks.
