Lady Cats Struggle vs. #1 Thayer

Submitted by Steven Rissler
The #1 ranked team in Class 2 girls came to the Sherman Hill Fieldhouse on Saturday, Feb. 9 to play a make-up game from the previous Thursday that was canceled due to weather. Thayer is known for their matchup zone and ability to keep games very low scoring. Today’s matchup would be no different. Long, slow offensive possessions by both teams would make for a low energy atmosphere. Licking would lead 9-8 after the first quarter. Licking would then make only two free throws in the second and trail 11-17 at halftime. Lady ‘Cat points were hard to come by again in the third as they could only manage 7 points to Thayer’s 17 points for a 34-18 score heading into the fourth quarter. Licking would finally get some energy late, scoring 14 points in the frame, but Thayer matched the effort and would leave Texas County with a 49-32 victory.
Karlee Holland led Licking with 18 points. Kiley Ingram and Abby Moncrief added 5 each, Tomi Rose 2 points, and Lainy Hadix and Anna Sullins 1 point each.
Thayer was led by College of the Ozarks signee, Julie Stone, with 17 points.
“We had an opportunity to get a signature win and didn’t show up mentally ready to execute and compete. It is very disappointing.” Coach Rissler
