Valentine’s Day was a special day for the seniors on the Lady Wildcats’ basketball team and cheerleading squad. Seniors were honored between the junior varsity and varsity girls’ final home basketball games vs. Iberia.
Junior varsity started the evening with a shortened, two quarter game that ended in a tie, necessitating overtime. The JV squad was able to pull out a one point win in overtime.
Between games, Seniors Lainy and Lexi Hadix and parents were introduced first, followed by Athena Hood and mother and special friends. These three players have been vital to the Lady ‘Cats basketball success.
Next, five cheerleading seniors were introduced, along with their parents. Mitzi Freeman, Tiana Lewis, Gloria Perez, Selena Sanchez, and Myrissa Sherrell were honored.
The seniors and coaches had an opportunity to speak, and then it was on to the varsity game. This was the Lady Wildcats’ last home game, regular season game, and conference game of the year, and they did not fail to succeed. The JV Lady Wildcats’ finished the season with a record of 13-7. The Varsity Lady ‘Cats finished with more than 20 regular season wins, 21-4, and as Frisco League champions for the third consecutive year.
At halftime of the varsity game, a “Chuck a duck” fundraising event for the student council brought out stiff competition. Mya Rinne won and donated her winnings back to the student council.
It’s on to districts now for the Lady ‘Cats and Wildcats, and both teams defeated Clearwater teams on Monday, February 18, in their first district games to advance to round two. The Lady ‘Cats play Wednesday night at 6 p.m. and the Wildcats play Thursday night at 6 p.m.

The junior varsity girls played a short game (two quarters) against Iberia due to Senior Night activities, but lengthened it somewhat by taking it into overtime. Kasey Richards propelled them to a win with this shot from the outside.
