Licking Pro Rodeo

By Marilyn Knutson

With the 35th Annual Licking Pro Rodeo just a few days away, we need to dig out those boots, dust off your hat and press your Wranglers and shirt. Plan on getting to the grounds early to visit with all those friends you’ve not talked to since last year, Cowboys Would.
As you walk around the grounds, gather at the concession stand and swap stories, think about how lucky we are to be able to enjoy our freedom, Cowboys Would.
As the rodeo goes on you will be able to cheer on each and every contestant as they compete on livestock to best a score from previous competitions, and be happy for whomever comes out the Victor, Cowboys Would.
There is something so many people don’t understand about this sport. Rodeo is not a traveling circus, contestants do not get paid if they are injured, and they spend most nights driving to the next rodeo. Some great things are that rodeo is a family and everyone helps each other out, be it behind the chutes, watching someone’s child, sharing rides on a run of rodeo to split gas and driving, or just being there for a fellow competitor. Cowboys Would.
So, as you see the Contestants walking around, talk to them thank them as they have chosen to be in Licking for your entertainment. But they also appreciate you being here year after year to cheer them on, be it muddy or dry weather (we can only pray for). Let’s rodeo, Cowboys Would and Cowboys Do!
New this year, we will be having a 50/50 drawing each night. Tickets for the 50/50 drawing are one for $1 and six for $5, with the drawing occurring toward the end of the rodeo. Four people will be walking around selling tickets, with an estimated amount being announced as the “pot” grows. Will you be the Lucky winner?
The Rodeo will be May 30, 31, and June 1, at 7 p.m. each night. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. with Mutton Busters signing up by 6:15; they must be eight and under and less than 55 lbs. Sign up at the City booth under the bleachers
Tickets at the gate are $15 for Adults, 12-years & up, and $7 for Kids 6-11. Advance tickets are being sold at City Hall and JL Friend Lumber; adults are $12 and kids are $6.
Thursday, kids 11-years & under are free, and a large screen TV will be given away, sponsored by Rinne’s Tire Pro. At intermission you can watch Licking FFA in a Tug of War.
Friday is Military night as we honor all branches of the military in our opening ceremony, Children five-years & under are invited to participate in the goat scramble during intermission.
Saturday downtown activities will find families having fun before the 2 p.m. parade, for which the kids always look forward.
Saturday is Pink night, so wear your pink to show support for Woman’s Cancer research. The calf scramble for kids 6-11 will be during intermission, and another big screen TV giveaway takes place, this one sponsored by CableAmerica.
We will have a beautiful quilt that will be raffled off; tickets are 1=$1 or 6 =$5 available at the rodeo. Proceeds will go to the Licking Chamber of Commerce to keep all the activities going. The quilt is made and donated by Restorative Justice. Looks for tickets being sold in downtown on Saturday.
