Volunteer firefighters injured in Maries County

By Shari Harris

According to the Office of the Maries County Sheriff Chris Heitman, members of the Maries County Sheriff’s Office and the Vienna fire department are investigating to determine the cause of a house fire in the 13000 block of Highway 28 W. that occurred on Friday, August 16. While the Vienna Fire Protection District was fighting the structure fire, there was an explosion in the residence, injuring six firemen.
Asst. Fire Chief Mark Bushman, and firefighters TJ Jeremy, Mason Smith, Chad James, Mark Honse, and Chase Lenning were transported to various mid-Missouri hospitals for second and third degree burns and cuts from flying debris. Four were treated and released, one was transferred for further treatment, and one was kept overnight for observation. On Saturday, August 17, the final firefighter was released from University of Missouri Health Center.
At this point the cause of the fire and resulting explosion is undetermined. The Missouri State Fire Marshal has been called in to assist with the investigation.
If you would like to support the injured firefighters, whose burns and other traumatic injuries are causing loss of income and increased medical expenses, an account has been established at Maries County Bank. A funnel fund option has been established by The YaYas of Belle. Tax deductible donations to help these firefighters can be dropped off at the Maries County Sheriff’s Office and the Maries County Bank, or mailed to Ya Yas, 20292 Hwy.
