Picking and Grinning on the Porch

                                                                                                                                Photos by Shari Harris

Picking and Grinning on the Porch at the Licking Mill began Saturday with beautiful blue skies and a moving tribute to our U.S. Military and Veterans. The Cat’s Meow harmonized the Star Spangled Banner. They then gave commentary on the different branches and responsibilities of the military while FFA members presented each service branch’s flag. The Pledge of Allegiance was said with hands over hearts. Later in the fall festivities the Bushwackers performed bluegrass, gospel and other musical favorites.

While many in the community are familiar with seeing the outside of the mill, Saturday offered two opportunities to not only see the inside of the mill, but also to learn about its internal workings. Mrs. Blackburn of The Licking Mill Society conducted the tours.

Angie Burgess and Ashley Hathaway represented the Missouri Department of Conservation and George O. White Tree Nursery. The young visitors enjoyed the booklets, bracelets, pencils and erasers. The older visitors received information on native trees and nursery services. The nursery is now buying seeds of native trees for the next planting season and accepting orders for seedlings.
