Eighth Grade Lady ‘Cats top Yellowjackets

By Coach Jennifer Smith

Friday, Dec. 6, the Licking Wildcats traveled to Lebanon to take on the Yellowjackets for the first time in several years.
The Yellowjackets controlled the tip-off, but the Lady ‘Cats quickly applied defense, causing their first of many forced turnovers and leading to Hannah Medlock getting the ‘Cats on the board first, never to look back. Patient but smart decisions led to  several scoring opportunities, giving the Lady ‘Cats  an 11-2 first quarter lead.
In the second quarter, the Yellowjackets came out and scored quickly on their first two possessions, cutting into the ‘Cats lead. The ‘Cats didn’t falter and continued offensively, with Makenna Skidmore, Ryleigh Barton, and Linzie Wallace adding points to the scoreboard. Offensive credit started with defensive stops by Riley Moloney and Finley Sullins and rebounding to start the breaks by Barton and Medlock in the second quarter to take a 27-12 half-time lead.
Second half focus was on solid defense and continued patience, looking for open drives to the basket.  Jamie Fike, Gracie Berriault, and Gracie Hunter came off the bench. helping the ‘Cats stay focused and picking up rebounds and defensive stops as well. The Lady ‘Cat team pulled together; all team members remained focused at the task and pulled out the win, 52-23.
