Licking Elementary fourth grade teacher Mrs. Suzie Blackburn attended the Licking Veteran’s Day program at the Licking VFW on November 11. After the program there was discussion about a local man serving in Afghanistan who was concerned about the upcoming holidays and how some of the men in his company will not be getting any letters or cards from home. Mrs. Blackburn said she could have the fourth graders write letters to him and his company.
That afternoon, Blackburn went back to school and discussed a plan to spread some holiday cheer from Licking to Afghanistan with Superintendent Cristina Wright, Principal Bradley Cooper and fellow fourth grade teachers Andrea Coffey and Kendra Goforth. A letter was sent home to the fourth grade parents asking for items that could be sent in care packages.
The fourth graders wrote letters of encouragement and gratitude to the soldiers, signed and decorated Christmas cards and brought essential items and candy.
Four men, including a father, a brother and a brother-in-law of Licking fourth graders, and their companies received items and candy of Christmas cheer. Three boxes were sent to Afghanistan and one went to South Korea.
