Lady Wildcats open season with a win

Coach Steve Rissler

The Licking Lady Wildcats opened the 2019-20 season Tuesday at the home of the highly regarded St. James Lady Tigers.  The MBCA pre-season poll was released that same Tuesday and had the Licking Lady Wildcats ranked second and St. James at the sixth spot. Also weighing in on this matchup was the fact that St. James and Licking had been placed in the same district after both winning their respective districts last season and returning the core of those teams.
The game started ugly for both teams as neither could get anything going offensively. Licking got on the board first off a high-low pass from Abbie Sullins to Abby Moncrief, but the Lady Tigers would score the next 10 points before a Lady ‘Cat timeout. Licking could only muster four points in the first and trailed 12 to 4 after one.
The second quarter was better but still not great for Licking. Karlee Holland got going a little, making two layups and a three-pointer to go with two inside baskets and two free throws from Moncrief. Licking went into the half trailing 25 to 19.
St. James got the ball to start the third quarter but Licking quickly took control of the game. Kylie Taylor hit a three from the corner to get things rolling in the right direction. Holland hit a pull up three from the top of the key to cut the lead to two and that’s when the rim opened up. Kylie Taylor proceeded to hit five more threes IN A ROW to go with a layup off a Holland steal to push the Licking lead to 15. St. James would score late to make the score 42 to 29 at the end of the third quarter.
Taylor hit her seventh three early in the fourth followed by a three and a runner from Abbie Sullins to extend the lead to 18. St. James made a little late run as Licking would go 1/5 from the FT line late for a 55-44 final score.
Licking was led by 23 points, 10 deflections, 4 rebs, 3 steals and 3 assists from Kylie Taylor; 15 points, 8 deflections and 4 steals from Karlee Holland; 9 points and 3 assists from Abbie Sullins and 8 points and 5 rebs from Abby Moncrief. Anna Sullins chipped in 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 5 deflections. Winter Murray added 4 deflections.

“This was a great early test for us. We will only get better as the season goes on and the girls get acclimated to their new roles. I have never won at St. James in my career so it is a very difficult place to play.” Coach Rissler.
