For nearly nine years, Mike Hammond and Brad Gale have been serving the customers of Hammond Feed. The feed store, owned by Mike Hammond and son, Derek, has become a vital business for farmers, ranchers and pet lovers in the area. For a time after the closing of MFA Feed Store, they operated as the only feed store in Licking.
In April, 2011, Hammond bought the business from the Williams’ family. Many may remember WW Feed, either in the current Hammond Feed building or before that, when the Williams’ sold feed from the little store building that previously occupied the lot.
Mike Hammond was no stranger to operating a business before Hammond Feed. He took over operation of Hammond Post and Lumber, his father’s business, from 1986 to 2002. Although that operation has closed, raising beef cattle adds to Hammond’s duties at the feed store.
Clint Akers joined Mike and Brad about two years ago and the three spend their workdays helping customers with their feed and farm supply needs. Mike Hammond said one of his favorite parts of the business is the people they serve.
“I enjoy the customers,” said Hammond; Akers and Gale quickly agreed. A table and several chairs have even been added just inside the door, offering a place for people to sit and visit. Hammond shared, “On rainy days, it’s standing room only.”
Hammond Feed offers feed for a variety of stock and pets, including cattle, horses, chickens, goats, dogs, rabbits and more. Hay, straw, wild bird seed and corn for squirrels are also available. In addition to some vet supplies, gloves and other farm implements and equipment like shovels, gates and hay rings, there are some items you might not expect. Hammond Feed refills propane bottles and sells ammunition and fishing supplies. To accommodate their customers’ needs, they will also sell smaller amounts of feed, for example, to someone with only one rabbit who doesn’t want to store a large bag of feed for months.
Though Hammond doesn’t expect any major changes for the store, seasonal changes are just around the corner. In preparation for gardening season they will soon be stocking garden seed, seed potatoes and onion sets.
Hammond Feed is at 215 E. Hwy. 32 in Licking, just past the old sale barn on the north side of the highway. It is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Stop by and see what they have to offer, or call with your questions at 573-674-3477.
