Lady ‘Cats upended by Blue Eye

By Coach Steve Rissler

The Lady Wildcats traveled to Baptist Bible College to play the 5th ranked team in class 2 in the Blue Eye Lady Bulldogs at the MBCA Hall of Fame Classic. Licking used their significant size advantage early and pounded the ball inside to center Abby Moncrief. Blue Eye hit three 3s in the first and held a slight lead of 13-9 after one quarter of play. The Lady Wildcats hit four 3s in the second quarter and extended the lead to as much as 12 points with very little time left before halftime. Poor decision making and rushed shots allowed Blue Eye to score nine points in 45 seconds to head in to the half trailing 26 to 29. Licking would lose the lead early in the third and struggle the rest of the way. Blue Eye’s aggressive man defense stifled Licking who struggled to run any offense. Instead of pounding the ball inside, Licking settled for deep 3s and contested shots. Blue Eye would lead 38-35 at the end of the third quarter. Licking continued to muster a comeback but eventually fell 41 to 50.
Moncrief and Holland scored 10 points apiece. Abbie Sullins added 8, Winter Murray 5, Kylie Taylor 3, Maci Sparks 3 and Anna Sullins 2.
“I am very disappointed in our lack of effort and lack of execution. Blue Eye out-gritted us today. We are extremely soft as a group and that alone has led to several poor performances this season. If we don’t adopt a different, tougher attitude, our season will be over in districts.” Coach Rissler.
Editor’s Note: The Lady ‘Cats scheduled game against Stoutland on Feb. 6 was postponed to Feb. 11 due to weather.
